Therapy VS Coaching
Have you been thinking about hiring a life coach or therapist? Is life coaching and therapy the same thing? In short, no. But there are some similarities. While life coaching and therapy are both focused on improving people’s well-being, there are distinct differences. Therapists require certain educational and license prerequisites to provide mental health care treatment.
Are you looking to get some support with some of the challenges your facing in life but are not sure if you need a life coach or therapist? Well look no further, I have done the work for you. Below you will find the comparison of what you can get from a life coach and a therapist.
Coaching
- Goes deep into the subconscious mind.
- Helps determine current beliefs you have.
- Re-programme your thoughts to help you eliminate the current BS.
- Help you understand how to control your thoughts and emotions.
- Focuses on the present and future
- Encourages immediate action.
- Seek to empower you to your self discovery
- Provide friend relationship Coaching is not mental health treatment or clinical care
- Coach understands you because they have been through a similar experience.
- Life coaches serve as guides through various aspects of your life
- Coaching can resemble talk therapy.
- Coaching focuses on achieving goals, behaviour changes, shifting perspectives, and overall self-improvement
- Coaches can help you improve your physical health, emotional well-being, and financial wellness
Therapy
- All surface level, the conscious mind.
- Your taught to live with the current thoughts and feelings you have, how best to move forward with these beliefs.
- Focused on the past only.
- Explores trauma to get you to understand why people behave a certain way.
- Can sometimes bring up past trauma and leave you there without helping you heal from them.
- Professional client based service, trained in mental health.
- They can prescribe you with medication.
- They can help you to understand your current patterns.
- Therapist most likely doesn't understand what your going through an only has degree
The biggest difference between the two is Therapy focuses on past events and teaches you how to live with the depression and understand why things happen whereas coaching helps to remove the beliefs that cause you to feel the low moods. It also focuses on the future and how to create a life you actually want.
A lot of my clients that come to me for coaching have also received some form of therapy, in fact just the other day one of my clients was telling me how she was getting more support from me than her therapist. She felt like the therapist was bringing up past traumas that she didn't even realise she had, but instead of helping her with these they were left on the surface creating a bigger issue for my client. It wasn't until we started working together we were able to go through these past traumas and learn to heal from them. We did with by re-writing the memory, because that is what we do when we want to change something from the past, we re-write the beliefs from the subconscious to something we actually wanted instead.
As a life coach we try not to focus on the past too much, only when the memories are creating barriers in our current state of mind, only then do we try to focus on where these beliefs have come from.
I hope this helps you in deciding if it is a life coach or a therapist you want to see.
